Egyptian Pyramid

Egyptian Pyramid

Kings of ancient Egypt believed they would need their physical bodies in the afterlife — not to mention their gold, slaves, and other belongings. Pyramids housed these essentials of eternity. The shape may have represented the sun‘s rays, which the dead king would climb to reach the celestial realm. Or, it might have symbolized the primordial mound from which Egyptians believed the world was created.

The first large pyramid was the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, built for King Djoser, who died around 2649 B.C. Perhaps the greatest pyramids of all were those at Giza, which entombed the bodies of kings Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure (2589-2504 B.C.). The Great Pyramid of Khufu towered nearly 480 feet high — and its sides, accurately oriented toward the cardinal points of the compass, each measured nearly 755 feet long.
