Most of
the fortifications we call castles were built during the Middle Ages
(1000-1500). As the central authority of the Carolingian empire collapsed,
nobles fought for power and territory. Their castles were their homes,
but also made strong enough to defend the occupants while serving
as a base for attacks on neighbors or mores distant enemies.
The first castles were wooden structures with earthen mounds, banks
and ditches used for extra defense. Stone castles often centered around
a large tower. The earliest known examples of these were built in
Doué-la-Fontaine, France, in 950.
Castle architects incorporated the character of the landscape when
designing the structures. Thus, castles took many different shapes,
including rectangular, circular, square, multi-sided and D-shaped.
